Over 2,400 Projects Received Trust Support in 2020/21
As people and communities in the Columbia Basin faced challenges over the last year, the Trust was humbled by the resiliency, strength, and the continued innovation and hard work by so many across this region, as evidenced in the release of our annual report.
Ecosystem Initiatives Benefit Upper Columbia
The Upper Columbia region of the Basin is benefitting from $1.15 million for two ecosystem enhancement and restoration projects. These locally-led initiatives include restoration of a watershed between Spillimacheen and Golden, and enhancement of 112 hectares containing overwinter elk habitat in the upper Kicking Horse Canyon. To date, there have been 19 projects supported by the Ecosystem Enhancement Program.
New Farmers’ Market Enhancement Grants
The Farmers’ Market Enhancement Grants support farmers’ markets in the Basin to adapt and respond to increased demand for local food and community interest while strengthening community well-being. Don’t miss out! This is a one-time granting initiative. Apply by December 7.
Hobby Shop Builds Model Following
During the pandemic, many businesses have stayed afloat by taking their business online. In Evan Johnston’s case, owner of Island Toys & Hobbies, he found success by doing the opposite—and the Trust’s Basin Business Advisors program was there to help.
Tailor-made for a Student
Fashion design student and Nelson local Daisy Morrison weaves wonders at the Stitch Lab’s after-school sewing club, using her passion to earn a bit of income. With help from a Trust wage subsidy, the owners were able to fill an essential role with a student to oversee the busy club, which was vital for the store’s economic health.
A Look Inside Our Commemorative History Book
Students and businesses across the Basin have benefitted from the Summer Works and School Works programs. In recent years, students have completed summer jobs at places like Purcell Timber Frame Homes in Nelson, Happy Cow Ice Cream in Fernie, The Pickle Patch in Creston and Derailed Sports in Golden.
