We are excited to announce the First Peoples Cultural Council is now accepting applications for the new program Reclaiming My Language: A Course for Silent Speakers with funding of up to $25,000 per course.

Deadline for applications is May 31, 2019.

Reclaiming My Language: A Course for Silent Speakers is currently completing its second pilot phase and this is the first open call for applications. This course is for B.C. First Nations people who understand but do not speak their First Nations language and is based on a successful program that was developed in Norway and Sweden for and by Indigenous Sami peoples.

The model uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support silent speakers to overcome barriers to using their Indigenous language in their communities. Those who have participated in the FPCC pilot projects have been instrumental in developing this program.

Course Information
The course must be completed between September 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020.

The course duration is 10 weeks for 2-3 hours each week and includes:

  • 10 silent speaker participants paired with a fluent mentor
  • Supportive environment to practice speaking the language
  • Certified mental health specialist experienced in CBT
  • Individual skill development in CBT
  • General language topics and weekly homework assignments
  • Internship opportunities to volunteer in a community language program
  • Funding to cover the costs of planning and delivering the course

A past participant of the pilot program described her experience as follows:
“I feel so much stronger as a Native person. Strength in knowledge. I felt ashamed of my level, and shame to speak in a non-native setting. This course has built up my courage to speak in any setting and be proud to be a strong native woman. Passing this on to my grandbabies.”
