Heritage BC Update: interpreting heritage with the help of paint and code

Celebrating Recipients of the 2018 Heritage Awards

Trethewey House Heritage Site Agents of Discovery

Award of Recognition, Heritage Education and Awareness

With a mandate to preserve and exhibit artifacts, and to educate and entertain the public, Heritage Abbotsford Society had trouble with capacity. How were they to accomplish the mandate with a collection that is just too large to display at Trethewey House? The solution came in the form of a smartphone app entitled Agents of Discovery. Now, 70% of the interpretation of the Heritage Site, Mill Lake Park and the actual exhibit can be accessed any time, any place. With this simple-to-use platform, Trethewey educators were able to create a fun, augmented reality game that gets everyone excited about history. The Heritage Abbotsford Society was even able to expand the story it tells to include the flora and fauna of the area and information about immigrant history and First Nations heritage. Agents of Discovery has allowed a wider range of information to be told in a more compelling way – it’s like Pokémon Go for heritage sites…  and completely free for the user!

Congratulations to:
Oliver Eberle, Customer Success representative for Agents of Discovery
Alexandra Pony, Director of PR & Social Media at Agents of Discovery

Award of Honour, Heritage Education and Awareness

It took 32 panels, 7 artists, along with the leadership of Syd Pickerell, for the murals to tell the story of agricultural development and pioneer life of the people of British Columbia. Springing out of the community value of “heritage preservation and exhibition”, one mural proudly depicts the relationship among the Kwantlen Nation, the salmon, and the Fort located on the banks of the Fraser River in Fort Langley; another illustrates the contribution of pioneering women of all ages while others show the many aspects of agriculture. With murals inside and outside the BC Farm Museum to complement their 5000 artifacts, British Columbia’s heritage is on proud and full display for all to see.

Congratulations to Syd Pickerell, BC Farm Museum Association
