Community Pride Workshop in Lumby-Saturday, July 22, 2017 10am-noon
Dr. Eric Li, an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of British Columbia Okanagan has invited members of the Monashee Arts Council to join the upcoming Community Pride Workshop in Lumby. Please contact Dr. Li directly for more information. The general outline of the event is as follows:
To briefly introduce the background of this workshop, my research team and I are currently conducting a research project titled “Engaging Stakeholders in Co-Creating Sustainable Communities: A Study on Rural Communities in the BC Interior” which is supported by the federal funding. The research is centred on understanding the best practices for rural community and health promotion. One aspect of the research involves collaborating with community members to celebrate the strengths of their community. We are planning to facilitate community workshops in some smaller communities in B.C. Interior where individuals in the community can gain access to basic camera skills and camera technology, participate in a hands-on learning exercise and co-create a visual celebration of the Village of Lumby. High quality camcorders and digital cameras will be provided, for the duration of the workshop, so attendees can learn camera technology and create a series of photographs or videos that visually demonstrate the strengths of the Village.
The Community Pride workshop will take place on July 22 (Saturday) at the White Valley Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The workshop will start with a short presentation by the UBC research team that outlines the goals and context of the project, this portion of the workshop will also include releases and informed consent. Following the presentation, an interactive lesson on basic camera technology will be given with emphasis placed on using camera technology to share unique perspectives of the community. Next, the UBC research team and community members will take a walk around the community to capture visual information about the strengths of the community using photography and videography. Finally, the workshop will conclude with a debriefing and social media tutorial to showcase the work of the attendees. There will be a draw for several gift cards as an honorarium for participating in the collaborative workshop.
